Episode 201-Surplus Bolt Action Battle Rifles for Survival
This is a follow-up to Episode 200 and my discussion of a few types of .308/7.62mm NATO 'battle rifles'. A listener (Tim C.) pointed out (correctly, I might add) that there are additional options for full-power defensive rifles beyond the typical semi-autos people like to talk about. I thought he made a good point and decided to cover the topic in brief.
Here are a couple of links related to the firearm options I cover:
General Info on Military Surplus Bolt Action Rifles

Chip,
Congrats on show #200 the other day.
What’s the real argument for wanting “common calibers”?
If you go back 2-3 years with some of the domestic ammo shortages, such common calibers were out of stock. You could however find semi-exotic rounds presumably because fewer folks have pistols in 10mm, or rifles in 7mm-08.
In the extreme opposite “mad max” scenario, is the logic that you’ll find an abandoned crate from the US Army filled with 5.56, 7.62 and 9mm?
If there’s ever a bad enough event that no retail stores are functioning, what difference does it make?
One consideration might be for barter, since there are more guns in those calibers.
The way I see it, either stock up or have the means to reload what you’ll need.
Thanks -Sean
